Hardware and Build Quality
At a first look you will feel that Zenfone 2 is a high-end device. The curvy back cover feels good and can grip the phone better than other devices. Its is not slippery so there’s a least chance that it will fall from your hand. The brushed metallic finish in the back give more premium look and fells that it’s a high cost phone without any doubt. But still it doesn’t look that premium like Samsung S6, HTC One. On the up you will find the Power button which is not a good placement in a 5.5 inches phone according to us. Just beside that Headphone port is placed. In the top of back you will find the camera and Dual LED flash. Just underneath the Camera you will get the volume rocker button. Some users feel that the button placement is wrong and some think its okay. So the placement of volume rocker totally depends upon users. According to us its so so. The speaker is placed underneath the back. For having the power button users may be in problem and the company knows that. That’s why they have given introduced double tap screen turn on and off option. Its very handy. Though having a 5.5 inches Asus Zenfone 2 is good for one hand use. Unlike other 5.5 inch phones the bezels are not that huge.
It has 1080p IPS display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The diplay looks very good and 1080p IPS panel feels better than other midrange products in the market. The viewing angels are great but in some point we have noticed some black level loss. The saturation and contrast level is very good. The brightness seems to be little low in Zenfone 2. Otherwise everything is good and user must be happy and totally satisfied with the display.
Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML model has Intel Atom Z3580 2.3 GHz Quad Core processor with whooping 4 GB RAM. At the first you will obviously notice the 4 GB RAM. This is world’s first 4 GB RAM smartphone and one of the key selling point for Asus Zenfone 2. The 64 bit architecture provides more flexibility and works like charm with 4 GB RAM Android Lollipop 5.0. We haven’t found any lag or slowness while switching from one app to another. The multitasking is very smooth. Intel is new to the smartphone market as a processor maker. They have done pretty good job to compete with the best of Qualcomm and MediaTek processors. In performance the phone works like charm and fully satisfied.
Gaming is a big part in smartphones. We have tested some high end games like Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5 in this device. They work flawlessly. With 4 GB RAM we can expect this type of gaming. We haven’t noticed any lag even while switching between Games. They are loading very quickly and haven’t found frame drops. So Gaming experience was very good with Zenfone 2.
Software UI and Apps
Zenfone 2 is running on Android Lollipop 5.0 with ZenUI on the top of it. The UI looks very clean and fresh. The basic Lollipop features are there and along with that Asus have done some tweaks on the design part. The quick launch buttons can be found in the notification shade. If you swipe down it once it will only show the time and settins. Swiping it again will show all the quick launch buttons. You can customize the panel in your way. The default launcher is clean too with some fresh wallpapers. Swiping the screen from down to up or long pressing on the screen will open the Home Management panel where you can change the Themes, Wallpapers and can find more quick settings.
Like other Android smartphones Zenfone 2 is pre-loaded with bloatware. With the basic Google apps there are so many essential Asus apps. The Google and Asus are separated in two folders and can be accessed very easily.
Asus have done pretty good job with Camera. The rear camera is a 13 MP shooter which can record upto 1080p videos. The Pixel Master software has done very good work to provide the best possible options for the 13 MP camera. The camera is filled too many quick features and effects. The shutter speed and focus is good enough to take quick pictures. The HDR mode works normally. One of the feature Asus were talking about in the launch event is the Low Light Mode. We have tested the camera. The images are not too noisy and not too processed. The front-facing camera is a 5 MP shooter which can take very good pictures. You can also take a panaroma picture with selfie camera. The quick settins are really great in Zenfone 2. Overall the camera is good enough and Asus tried the best to tie 13 MP with the price point.
Battery and Sound
The battery is 3000 mAh in Zenfone 2 which is non-removable. We can expect atleast one day battery backup with 3000 mAh batteries. Asus has done pretty good job with battery and it gives almost one day backup with simple usage. Though with heavy gaming and 3G or 4G network it will not last till the end of the day.
The sound is clear and loud. The built in equalizer is very good and gives the best tune. The call quality is pretty good with simple call and in loudspeaker too. The calls were very clear and no noisy sounds.
Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML is a complete package of best features at midrange price. There is no problem with storage, games running flawlessly, performance is very good, smooth multitasking, one day battery backup with medium usage, 5.5 inches display, good sound quality, what a user can expect more than this at this price? This is a complete package and Asus Zenfone 2 is obvioulsy one of the best midrange device.
